StenAst SW

Water-Based, Single-Component, General Purpose Surface Conditioner

Floor Coatings · Surface PrimersJoint Sealants

The water-based counterpart to StenAst® S: a silane-based surface conditioner that is not flammable or ignitable, so it can be applied in enclosed spaces with limited ventilation and in facilities where solvents are not permitted.

StenAst® SW is a single-component, silane-based surface conditioner prepared for all Stenkim brand polymer materials, topcoats, joint sealants and surface coating materials. Unlike film-forming primers, it leaves a layer only a few molecules thick: one end of the silane molecule reacts with the application surface and the other with the material to be applied, chemically strengthening adhesion. What sets it apart is that it is water-based, and therefore not flammable or ignitable.

Areas of Use

StenAst® SW is used ahead of Stenkim brand polymer-based coating materials, topcoats and joint sealants such as StenCoat®, StenSeal®, StenSport® and StenCare®, applied especially on surfaces such as concrete, wood, epoxy and polyurethane. It ensures adhesion without forming a third layer between the surface and the material.

Its water-based composition makes it the choice where solvent-based surface conditioners cannot go: enclosed spaces with limited ventilation, and facilities where the use of solvents is not permitted. It is also a suitable surface conditioner for concrete floors in constant contact with water. It is very suitable for newly cut joints in concrete pavements; since it does not stain when it spills outside the joint, it does not change the appearance.

Two points deserve attention on site. The water on the surface must be allowed to evaporate completely before a joint sealant or coating is applied — water left on the surface causes blistering and loss of adhesion, particularly with polyurethane-based materials, and adequate ventilation shortens the wait. And because it leaves no visible film once dry, the applicator has to keep track of which areas have been conditioned. In dusty environments, or when old joint material is removed and replaced, take the utmost care with surface cleaning.
